“It don’t mean a thing, if you ain’t got that bling”

I had an issue with the chain on my P3. I noticed when I was cleaning the chain that one of the pins was working lose.

Also, for some unfathomable reason, one section of the chain was fitted the wrong way round. You can see in the picture that 5 of the links have a slot in them, for the rest of the chain, these slots are on the other side.

Something weird is going on there, and I don’t want a chain coming apart, especially during a race.

Time for a new chain. I could have just bought a replacement Dura Ace chain, but after a little research, it seems that KMC chains are a little better.

I was also swayed by the half price deal on amazon :D

Fitting

First thing to do, shorten the chain. The chain came with 118 links, my current chain had 106. I measured, marked up the link to remove (not forgetting the quick link), then using a topeak chain tool, extracted the pin and removed the extra links.

I threaded the chain back through the derailleur and using the wire link brace from the chain tool, held the two ends of the chain together and fitted the quick link. Job done, stand back and take in the bling ;)
